Membership Criteria
Membership is open to attorneys and all those who possess a juris doctorate or equivalent degree and are licensed or authorized to practice law in Texas. Attorneys who would like to become members must render legal services involving probate law; have an understanding of Texas probate law or wish to gain such knowledge; be committed to the highest standards of ethics in representing the needs or promoting Texas probate law; have a commitment to positive involvement in the work of the TCPL and its purposes.
Each applicant must demonstrate substantial involvement in the area of Texas probate law and have endeavored to encourage the study, improve the practice and elevate the standards of probate law in Texas, as evidenced by one or more of the following:
- The applicant is a member in good standing of the Texas state bar association and the probate section of the Texas Bar Association.
- The applicant served as a faculty member on a Texas probate law CLE program.
- The applicant served as a Texas probate judge.
- The applicant served on a standing committee or executive committee of a local bar association probate or estate group.
- The applicant authored published articles on Texas probate law.
- The applicant participated as counsel for an appellant or appellee, or as an amicus curiae, in a Texas probate law matter presented to any Texas appellate court.
- The applicant served as a professor or instructor of law school courses in the area of Texas probate law.
- The applicant served as an editor or publisher of any probate law newsletter, journal or similar publication.
- The applicant authored a major treatise on probate law.
